We live in a society where media is heavily used. We depend on media every day, and we can use it for every part of our lives; in our personal relationships, for entertainment, at work and in our studies. Media has helped communities respond to disasters, create a good business strategies, have a better banking systems, and it’s changing healthcare and public health to be better. But there are bad sides of social media platforms as well. Teenagers are the ones who are using media the most, and they can spend many hours on it at a time, even getting addicted to their screens. Social media is one of the main reasons young people can get eating disorders and have low self esteem/ depression.
Anxiety and low self esteem is usually linked to social media, because people on the internet can say anything they want, especially hurtful and mean words. Teenagers are usually always trying to impress their peers, and other people, to be cooler. When teens see popular celebrities on social media, they usually want to be like them, so they always set up unrealistic goals to be more like them. When they don’t succeed, they would feel sad and depressed. Social media isn’t safe for young teens either, one click and you can see things you shouldn’t see. Some people post depressing things, that affect the way some people think.
Eating disorders are also very dangerous and can be cause because of social media. Most social media platforms that are usually very famous women have are very skinny and can even be models that have absolutely no fat and look “beautiful” in anything. The reality is that their bodies are usually very unrealistic and people (usually younger women) want to be like them and think that there is something wrong. Which is a scary case and it leads to them overly exercising. It could also lead to throwing up after eating to lose wait, bulimia, which is deadly and could eventually lead to anorexia.
